I would recommend starting each run with no lead-out. This will help you remain connected with your dog from the start. Forget about playing it safe; be ready for the race! You initially might not notice any dramatic change with your new positive outlook for a while since the dog may be still working off the old style of running. But given time you will begin to see the changes when the dog starts to believe in the new you. Well, I have a story to tell about Gunner the Border Terrier. He was one of the original participants in our classes to teach slow dogs to increase their speed on course. Gunner’s personality was that of a proverbial banker; he was a very conservative guy. He always took his umbrella to work every day just in case of rain. His desk was always immaculate. He never attended the office parties because people there told off-color jokes. Gunner was about as strait-laced as you can get. His owner Kathy told me that she could never get him to tug. With our increased emphasis on having fun, Gunner now tugs and kills a food-filled toy. He has taken off his business suit and tie and has let loose. Kathy began to believe in herself and in Gunner and accomplished her goals. Kathy has done a wonderful job of teaching Gunner to become a party animal. I have always had a soft spot in my heart for Gunner and I have been running him lately. I am a little more willing to be a crazy person in the ring than Kathy is, and Gunner has gone from being 2 to 5 seconds over course time in AKC Excellent Standard to his recent all-time best of 14 seconds under course time. Go, Gunner, Go. I have given the Speed Demons seminar for more than three years. This seminar is specifically aimed at dogs that need what I have outlined in this article. Your belief in yourself and your dog is what is going to get better course times. Work in drive. Train for the ultimate fun partnership. Forget the wrong moves and learn from running with reckless abandon. Be silly. Your dog will have a great time and you will reap the benefit of your new-found speed.
