© DIANELEWISPHOTOGRAPHY.COM United States Dog Agility Association By Ken Tatsch USDAA’s Grand Prix of Dog Agility is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year when the best in each class will vie for the coveted top award as Grand Prix World Champion. If you haven’t participated in this great tournament, you don’t know what you’ve been missing. The Grand Prix began in 1988 with 79 competitors in a three-day tournament event in Houston, Texas. More than 10 times as many dog and handler teams compete today in the ﬁnal 3 days of this historic tournament series, which now includes almost 200 local qualifying events and 8 regional championships. It has served as the headliner of the Cynosport World Games since 2003 and includes competitors from more than a dozen countries. USDAA created the Cynosport World Games in 2003 to feature not just the Grand Prix but all of its tournament series, as well as to promote canine sport by bringing together our long-time friends in ﬂyball and ﬂying disc, along with exhibitions of a variety of other canine sporting activities. There is truly something for everyone. In addition to the Grand Prix, USDAA features its $10,000 Dog Agility Steeplechase (now in its 11th year), the Dog Agility Masters International Three-Dog Team Championship (in its 16th year), and beginning this year, a full offering of equivalent tournament series for the competitors in USDAA’s Performance Program.With full equivalency of class offerings now available in the Performance Program, both domestic and international interest and participation has signiﬁcantly increased. In ﬂying disc, the Ashley Whippet Invitational and the Flying Disc Dog Open combine to name a single World Champion in the Cynosport World Flying Disc Championship. In ﬂyball, the North American Flyball Association hosts the Cynosport World Flyball Championships, and in dock jumping, SplashDogs is building an international following that will lead to a future world championship series. Regional competitions are being held also in rally obedience and herding instinct tests, with public exhibitions and attractions in canine freestyle, lure coursing, public agility ring, and more. With so much to do, it is no wonder the event covers two entire polo ﬁelds. More importantly, it is a spectator event that gives the competitors in canine sport the attention and respect they deserve.
