You can create excitement by the way you deliver the food. Instead of handing your dog a piece of food for doing a jump, tease him with it and then throw a few pieces back and forth for him to chase. You can build a lot of drive this way. You don’t even have to actually give your dog the food each time—in fact, it is better if you do not always give him the food. The anticipation of wondering when he is going to get the cookie is very exciting. Playing A Cappella Naked games food. Dog trainer Brenda Buja calls these “naked games.” These are the games you need to call on when you are waiting to go in the ring and want to get your dog tuned in to you, or you are stuck on the start line because the timer malfunctioned and the ring crew is fiddling with it. If your dog has a strong love for naked games, you can reinforce him when he does a perfect set of weave poles at a trial, without the need for “props.” Most naked games start out as cold or, at best, lukewarm activities. By practice and reinforcement, they become hot activities (those activities that have natural, pleasurable meaning for your dog; see my April article). For some dogs, naked games come rather naturally, but for most dogs a substantial history of reinforcement is necessary before they will come to love naked games. Here are some examples of great naked games: ● ● ● activities when waiting at the start line as they keep both members of the team relaxed. Small dogs often especially love these games. ● Shoving the dog backward with a hand placed on his chest. Speaking: Just click when your dog barks, then put it on cue. Jumping up on handler or into handler’s lap/arms. Pinching toes: Make pinching motions with your fingers as you stalk your dog and gently pinch his feet. Eventually, just the pinching motion will be enough to rev up your dog. Loud smooches or backward kisses: If your dog’s size permits, lift him off the ground while smooching. Jumping from side to side, keeping your body low, and/or running around like a lunatic: At first you can teach your food-motivated dog to love these games by doing these moves in conjunction with throwing food around. ● ● ● ● ● If you want to compete in agility, there are going to be plenty of times when you are without food or toys but still need to engage and reinforce your dog. Your ultimate goal is to have a repertoire of reinforcers that do not require toys or Jumping up for a hand touch. Doing side-to-side hand touches.
