I thought I would teach her restraint coupled with a fast start, but once again she surpassed me. While she sat and I stood a distance away from her with a treat in my hand (remember, we are a food-motivated team), gave her the Ready, Freddy (short for Caja) and then the release command. As I clumped my way forward, she burst from her sit and raced to the treat. Apparently, this was another no-brainer for her and yet another challenge to me as I struggled to quick-start myself for a run toward an obstacle. Weave poles were another challenge. First I had to figure out which shoulder her first pole should be on no matter where I was. Again, this was tricky for me because of my left-handedness or, some would say, my plain backwardness. Fortunately, she was right-pawed (animals really do have preferred sides) and not at all backward. She was, however, unimpressed, disinterested, and disdainful of these upright PVC poles sticking in the ground. Her facial expression was puzzled as she dutifully followed my hand in and out to the rhythm of my voice saying Ta and Da. Don’t ask why Ta and Da; no idea but it seemed like a good rhythmic one at the time. She eventually and reluctantly seemed to get the idea and, lo and behold, when she did a few on her own, she got this huge Ta-Da reward, about three days’ worth of treats. I headed for the cookie dough ice cream. Sequencing, sometimes for as many as 21 obstacles, was another challenge. For this, I had to rely on a memory subject to brown-outs and Caja’s ability to read my compromised mind. When memory failed, improvisation kicked in. Although this talent did not lead to Qs when later tested in trials, it provided understanding chuckles from the spectators. Caja, ever-faithful, managed to follow me around despite my hesitations, circumambulations, and occasional bursts of creativity. Through it all and despite me, Caja always had her tail perked up, her eyes sparkling, and her mouth in that wonderful Cocker smile. Eventually, I decided we need real-world experience and should enter a trial. The first trial was figuring out a thing called a premium list—the name itself was intimidating. I was still an agility illiterate; I thought the list was for seasoned competitors who knew what they were reading. The two pieces of paper were crowded with more information and blanks than an IRS form. Besides, I couldn’t figure out how to complete it—division, class, A, B, trial 1, trial 2, ILPs, LPs. Would I need the help of a CPA?
