Videotaping her runs helped St. Louis handler Michelle Blumenthal undergo a crucial attitude adjustment in the ring. As a longtime athlete and Type A perfectionist, Michelle brought her intense competitiveness to agility, overlooking the fact that it was supposed to be fun for the dog. Fortunately, Michelle travelled with a friend who was more seasoned in agility, and they recorded each other’s runs. Michelle began to notice her friend coaching her through comments she’d whisper while taping. “I was letting my emotions and my competitiveness get to me, and it was shutting down my dog’s performance. She could see the instant our run broke down, and she would tag the moment with a quietly spoken, ‘Oops, you dropped your shoulders… just keep going; keep it together.’” Michelle says it took a year of watching herself on videos to break the habit of “losing her cool.” But eventually she learned to stay positive for the entire run, praise her dog no matter what happened, and get all the way through the course looking like she was having fun. “Using video to identify training issues is common…

but what I learned changed my relationship to my dog. Now I’m the poster child for happy agility runs. I’m still competitive and a frustrated perfectionist, but neither my dog nor the spectators know about it.”

Videotaping Your Training Sessions
Set up the camera on a tripod and shoot wide-frame when running multiple-obstacle sequences. Be sure you can see your dog’s position on the start line as well as the final obstacle at the end of the sequence. During playback, use the camera’s zoom function to look at specific parts of the sequence up close. When videotaping a specific behavior (for example, the dog’s stride over the A-frame, his takeoff before spread jumps, or running contacts), set the camera up on the tripod to capture only as much as necessary in the frame. You want to see things more closely and be able to slow the footage down to examine stride length and foot placement. Shoot from various angles. Position the tripod on both sides of the obstacles or sequence you’re working on. Things can look different from the left or right side of the equipment. This may also give you better perspective on your own handling.
