Coaching and Technical Skills Development:
The Relationship Between Instructing and Coaching

There are a number of theoretical models that describe the type of coach or instructor we are or can become. Evaluating your coaching style and how people are likely to respond to it (learning styles) is essential to understanding why some clients respond positively (or not) to your approach. There is a wide range of textbooks and theories on the subject of coaching; however, one of the easiest to digest is called Successful Coaching by Rainer Martens. I can do no better than recommend you start there if you want to find out more.
Much of what I do daily on a professional basis has to do with training handlers, not dogs. As a result much of the learning theory applied relates to human physiology and psychology rather than that of the dog. However, I believe with careful adaptation similar theories can also be applied to training the agility dog.
“Selling” Feedback
I have found when talking to club instructors at seminars that most are comfortable when performing in instructor mode, but find it very difficult to understand their role as a coach. In fact most do not realize they can and do move from one style to another. This lack of confidence in their coaching ability usually exhibits itself when we discuss the need to give feedback to experienced handlers. This may be because they are comfortable in an environment where they are in “tell” (instruct) mode, but not one where they have to “sell” their feedback (coach). I deliberately use the term sell when talking about coaching because for the most part experienced handlers think they know everything and that there isn’t much anyone else can tell them about agility. At least that’s what less confident instructors sometimes believe and what some so-called experienced handlers actually think.

So the feedback we have about how we think experienced agility handlers can improve their performance has to be sold to them—they have to be convinced there is some value in the feedback you have. Mostly this depends on the way the feedback is offered. For example, a comment like “You are not doing this (or that) correctly,” is not going to get the same response as the statement, “If I said I can find an extra 3/10ths of a second in that sequence of obstacles for you, would you be interested?’ Our experienced handlers, if they are genuinely interested in improving performance, are much more likely to respond to the latter statement. If you were paying attention when reading my earlier articles you may now have some idea about how you can achieve this!
