needed to keep the dog on the most efficient path and to connect the individual obstacles in the correct order. When presented with handler restrictions, some handlers’ first inclination is to loudly blame the judge for a poorly designed course that doesn’t flow. If a course is comprised of more than a few pinwheels with one or two obvious side changes, the walk-through can feel like trying to solve a puzzle in the middle of a very angry mob. Instead of addressing the challenge and

taxing a bit of intellect, the judge becomes a scapegoat and some handlers resort to brute force to send their dog through the course. When discussing these challenges with Paul Stolzenburg, a USDAA judge for over 15 years, he commented, “If you notice on my courses, I rarely ask the dog for great feats of strength or movement: but I’m always looking to see if handlers have correctly identified the best path for their dog. Sometimes I’m blunt with that question, sometimes I’m subtle. Show me

you know how to read the course, and you’ve trained your dog to handle it.” The following drills all contain path challenges. Some require independent obstacle skills, while others require thoughtful consideration and skillful execution of your chosen handling system. If the sequences are too difficult, break them apart into smaller pieces and train the distance and handling skills needed to present the appropriate path to your dog in a fair and efficient manner. Set up dog on a straight line from #1-#2. Lead out with him on right to a position allowing a well-timed front cross between #3-#4. Be stationary at wing of #6 when he exits #5 tunnel. Use a false turn to keep him from taking offcourse jump (green). Finish with dog on left.
Lead out with dog on right. Keep dog on right to #5. Do a front cross between #5-#6. Handle #8-#10 as a serpentine. Finish with dog on left.
Lead out with dog on right to far end of tunnel. Or do a lead-out pivot at near end of tunnel and a rear cross at #3. Keep dog on right to #5. Do a front cross between #5-#6. Do a rear cross before #7 and finish with dog on right.
