Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy
Platelet-rich plasma therapy is a relatively new procedure being used in the canine performance athlete. It is more commonly used in the equine athlete and human medical profession. It offers another option to owners besides surgery to help promote healing and restore function of bone, tendon, ligament, and cartilage injury/damage. Platelets are used by the body to control bleeding when an injury occurs; however, platelets serve other important functions. One of these is to initiate recruitment of white blood cells to an injured site to clean up dead or injured cells and tissue components. Another is the release of growth factors that are directly responsible for tissue regeneration, healing, and inhibiting inflammation. Platelet-rich plasma is a concentrated level of platelets derived from blood drawn

from the patient. It is centrifuged so the platelet components of the blood are separated and concentrated and then injected into the injury site. PRP is currently being used to treat the following: muscle tears/strains, cruciate ligament and other ligamentous injuries, tendon injuries, delayed healing or complicated orthopedic fractures, and degenerative joint disease. The number of injections per injury site is dependent upon the severity, chronicity, and condition being treated.

Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Protein (IRAP)
IRAP utilizes progressive gene therapy to combat osteoarthritis in horses, dogs, and cats. In the arthritic joint Interleukin-1 (IL-1) is a cytokine that plays an important role in the inflammatory cascade and accelerates the deterioration of tissues in the joint such as cartilage. IRAP blocks IL-1 from binding to tissues thus inhibiting further damage to the joint. IRAP is derived from blood being drawn from the patient then processed at the veterinary clinic and ready for joint injection typically within 24 hours. D

Regenerative Stem Cell Therapy
Adult stem cells are unique in their ability to divide and create other cells like themselves. These cells can be used to repair and slow down the progression of degenerative changes present which extends the career of the canine athlete.
