proach some years ago. Once again, it is useful to have a bit
of knowledge of the science to reassure you this is the right
thing to do.
I used to think (as I was first taught) that to treat a dog when
he was showing a fearful response was to reward that behavior. However, thanks to the science, I now realize that
emotions cannot be reinforced. That is, if I am upset and a
friend comforts me, it is not going to reinforce my emotion
of being upset and make me more upset. Instead, it may help
to change my emotional state, so that I become less upset.
Therefore, by using treats and classically conditioning in such
circumstances with our dogs, we are working toward altering their emotional state in order for them to view the scary
things in life in a different light.
SAFETY MATTERS!
But beware! We must be careful to do everything in the correct order!
Hear scary noise - give continuous treats - scary noise stops
- treats stop = The scary noise predicts treats. I really don't
mind the scary noise!
Give treat - hear scary noise - treats stop - scary noise stops
= The treat predicts the scary noise! I really don't think I like
this treat!
Operant Conditioning
Operant conditioning refers to a conditioned response over
which the animal does have some control. With operant conditioning, the animal learns, "If I do this, I can expect that. If
I do this, I can make good consequences happen." For example, children in school learn that if they sit quietly when the
end of school bell rings, they may get out of class sooner. Restaurant staff learn that if they give good service, they increase
the likelihood of earning a good tip.
Our dogs are learning in this way, too-even without the
clicker! For example:

"My owners always play with me if I drop a toy at their feet!"
"If I sit quickly at meal time, food is delivered promptly."
"If I stare at my owner long enough, she will give me that treat!"
Operant conditioning is a major tool in the clicker trainer's
toolbox. Dogs that have been conditioned to expect reinforcement (usually in the form of treats or toys) at the sound
of the click, can be taught very specifically which action or
part of an action is producing the desired outcome for them.
For example:
"The moment my front feet touch the ground, that click happens and I earn reinforcement."

"The moment I land on the table that click happens and I
earn reinforcement."
The dog learns exactly what he is doing that produces the
sound that results in the treat. This makes repetition of that
action far more likely. Once the desired behavior is happening
predictably, we can put a cue on it and get it under stimulus
