Cue Identification

In order to practice specific moves with your feet you have to
know exactly what the footwork looks like for the cue you want
to use. If I asked you what cue you would give if you want your
dog to park his backside on the floor, you would probably say
Sit. You would not have to cock your head, look to the sky, and
respond with "hmmmm, let me see...." If I asked you to name
all the turn cues you have taught your dog could you quickly
tell me? Could you then show me the footwork for each? You
can't have consistent footwork until you can identify what the
footwork cue actually is for each turn.

Paralleling the Dog's Path
The turquoise handler is running directly for the next correct
obstacle in sequence, the teeter. In doing so, she converges on
the dog's correct path (red path). By converging on the dog,
she changes his path and is now paralleling a path to the
off-course A-frame (orange path). The blue handler has made
her path parallel the dog's correct path. She is correctly cueing
the teeter by doing so. Note that the paths taken by each team
are paralleling each other.

Not all of your cues involve your feet, but lots do. Step one is
to really look at how you move your feet to execute your turns.
Watch video of yourself and other handlers moving into and out
of front crosses, executing threadles and serpentines, giving send
cues, and exploding laterally. Do you have names for the movements that you see all these different feet doing? The names may
be the turn cue itself, like front cross, for example. It's okay if
the names are in your own agility language; the name itself is not
important. What is important is learning how to identify all the
cues that are given with the feet. Learn the cues you give with
your feet and the cues others are using, too, so that you can be
clear when you decide which cues you want to perfect.
