The Judge's
Debriefing

I recently started judging UKI in addition to USDAA. Last year I was invited
to judge the US Open for UKI. It's their
national championship event and also
the main event for choosing the WAO
(World Agility Open) USA world team.
This was a very large event and there
were lots of people trying for the spots
on the team, I was assigned to design
and judge both Masters Final courses,
Agility and Jumping. When I have classes where winning and placing means a
great deal, I like to design courses with
lots of options so people can choose
what they feel is best and fastest for
their dog. Figure 1 shows the Jumping course. I really enjoyed judging this
course and, thanks to George Mariakis
and his software and real time results,
after each group rotation I could see
who was winning each height division.
Figure 2, obstacles #1-#4, shows the first
puzzle to solve. This was handled many
different ways and only a few dogs took
the wrong side of #2. Then handlers had
to decide which way to turn at #2 and
which side of the straight tunnel they
wanted to be on to get the weave pole
entry. Turning left at #2 (red path) and
front crossing #3-#4 and running with
the tunnel on the handler's left was one
choice. Turning the dog right at #2 (orange path) was another, but after that
decision people were split as to whether
they handled the tunnel on the right or
left. Some dogs turned left at #2 very
nicely; some went wide.

After that maybe a dozen dogs took the
#16 jump before getting in the weave
poles, earning an off-course. Most dogs
either shot out of the straight tunnel
faster than the handler and only saw that
jump, others overhandled the weave entry and therefore sent the dog over the
jump as the handlers were blocking the
view of the weave poles. Handlers with
