In general, a start routine should consist
of happy, excited tricks that are followed by a waiting position. Tricks will
add movement and excitement into the
routine and the waiting part will allow
you to gain some advantage on the actual
start line. I suggest that your start routine
includes no more than two tricks and a
waiting position. However, you can use
other happy tricks as a part of warming up. For example, the start routine I
use for one of my dogs consists of him
spinning, walking backward, and then
waiting in standing position. When I'm
warming up this dog, however, I also do
other tricks: jumping in the air, barking,
figure-eight between my legs, and some
nose touches. But like everything else,
what you do for a warm-up and for your
start routine depends a lot on the individual dog. Just pay attention that you do
not tire your dog out doing tricks as part
of your warm-up since he still needs to
run agility afterward!

When deciding what your start routine
should look like, you again have to take
into consideration the most important
one on your team-your dog. In the
previous article I mentioned how important it is to know your dog. But besides
knowing what triggers your dog to act
excited and motivated, there is another
thing that is equally important when creating start routine; that is knowing how
your dog behaves when he is excited,
happy, and anticipating something great.
When you know that, you can put his
enthusiastic behaviors on cue and use
them anytime you want to make him feel
that way.

routine. For example, if the dog is taught
that after a specific routine it's time for
action and excitement, we can more easily transfer that behavior later on to agility or any other dog activity. Your start
routine should be simple and very clear
to the dog, even when he is in excited
state of mind.
Tricks for Your Start Routine
I like to include tricks in my start routine
that are close to my dog's natural behavior
when he is excited. This way, the start
routine itself will be a trigger for the dog to
become excited. To find these behaviors,
observe your dog when you know he is in
excited state of mind; for example, when
you come home from work, before you
give him his meal, when you are heading
out for a walk, before you unleash him, etc.
Does he bark, spin, jump? See what significant behaviors he is offering and make
them into tricks. With some dogs that are
not passionate barkers by nature, I teach
them to bark on command. Barking is a
very common natural response of an alert,
excited dog so we can "trick" the dog's
brain to switch to an excited mood when
we ask him to bark on command. When
you're encouraging barking, just be careful
that you encourage the happy, excited barking, not the type of barking that can
be result of insecurity or even aggression.
