How do you determine
initial placement and progression in class levels?

as close as possible to how

evaluation is to watch the

I will have a potential student
come and watch the class
they are interested in joining.
If they think it's a good fit,
I'll let them join on a trial
basis. I also recommend that
they set up a lesson soon
after, so they can address
any training or handling issues they might be having. I
prefer that students take both
a handling and a skills class
if they're able, as they focus
on different things. Class
placement is not based on
competition level as I often
have young dogs with experienced handlers who are
quite capable of being in an
advanced-type class.

Do you run more sequences than courses, courses
than sequences, or 50-50?

My handling classes run full
courses and focus on analysis. The skills classes run
short sequences and work
on specific obstacle performance, handling maneuvers,
and drills.
What is your average
class size?

Usually 8 dogs per class.
Do you allow one handler
with multiple dogs in the
same class? If so, up to how
many dogs?

Yes, I have no problem with
that but limit it to two dogs.
Dog Details

Most dogs are crated during
handling classes or hang out
at their handler's chair. Dogs
are not allowed to wander
during classes!
Do you allow reactive dogs
at your facility?

I do allow reactive dogs in
class as long as the handler
understands how to manage
their behavior and is working toward the goal of teaching the dog better coping
skills. I'm fortunate to have a
local trainer that is wonderful at working with reactive
dogs and their handlers,
so I often refer teams to
her so they have additional
help and feedback. Dog- or
people-aggressive dogs are
not allowed.

Where do class dogs "hang
out" during class? On stay
mats? In crates? Tied to a
fence? Wandering around?
Do you have a policy?
