him from the beginning, nearly a quarter century ago, and remains
his plan for now and for the future. Jim and his wife, Nancy Gyes,
at the 1996 World Dog Show, and has won Cynosport Grand Prix
and team events. Each of his four competition Border Collies earned
USDAA Platinum Lifetime Achievement awards.

Getting Started
There was always a dog in the Basic
family. For years, it was an Irish Setter.
When Jim was 17, his brother brought
home what looked like a miniature German Shepherd. "He was such a neat
dog," Jim remembers. When he lost him
at age 13, it was time to think about his
next dog. Jim did his due diligence to
find the appropriate breed. "I was working nights and had a lot of time during
the day. I wanted a dog that would fit
my active lifestyle." He chose a Border
Collie. An employee of Boeing in Se-

attle, Jim decided to take advantage of
the company's Dog and Gun Club and
enrolled in obedience class. He was intrigued when he saw the agility class that
was also offered there.
"There was so little information about
agility back then. I found a book with a
picture of an agility ring in England and
built my own obstacles at home." He
made V-shaped poles by using crutch
tips and taught his dog how to weave.
