This training should be fun and easy work for you and your dog. You will find that is it very natural
for the dog to respond to this motion. You will have to remind yourself to look for the places to take
advantage of the move when you walk your sequences in class and your courses at the trial.
The lateral motion cue should be planned into and practiced during your walk-through,
just like all your other cues.
Choose Me Drill
Execute your lateral motion cue on jump #1, using jump #2 as an off-course jump.
You are asking your dog to choose you (your cue) over the tempting decoy jump.
Play with the space between the two jumps to increase or decrease difficulty so that
you are working at an 80% success rate.
Parallel Jumps: Choose Me
Start the dog close to the jump initially.
With success, gradually decrease the
distance between the jumps and start the
dog farther from the jump.
End-to-End Configuration
Run straight toward jump #1 then execute the lateral motion cue. Rotate to run
and, as you do, cue jump #2 of the 180 as if it was the middle jump of a three-jump
serpentine; keep driving past jump #2. If your dog is too fast for you to make it to
serpentine position (past the second stanchion of jump #2) you may have to move
the jumps closer together or add a send to jump #1 just before the lateral motion.
In course work you will often combine the send cue and the lateral motion cue.
End to End Jumps
The lateral motion cue is executed on jump
#1. Use a serpentine cue for jump #2.
