Using an obstacle after the chute Then we introduced a second tunnel an
open tunnel scrunched up to 6' long so that Joe had a focus to draw his
attention T forward of the barrel and so that the reward was further from
the chute. On the first few repetitions we held the fabric of the tiny 3'
chute open and we showed Joe the next tunnel, placed just a few feet away
as in Figure 2. We released Joe to the 2 Place a 6' open tunnel a few feet
away from the short chute with a target after it. Hold the fabric open a

a small opening for the dog to look through. there was a small opening for
the dog to look through. We gradually increased the distance between the
end of the chute and the open tunnel to about 15' as shown in Figure 3. We
also introduced Joe to a low jump placed 12' closer for small dogs beyond
the end of the chute as shown in Figure 4. T Note: I do not do this step
when I am starting a novice dog on the chute. It is not important for a
dog that is just 3 Gradually move the open tunnel farther away from
learning the chute to do another obstacle immediately after performing the
chute. In fact, it could be detrimental the chute until the obstacles are
about 15' apart. to introduce a novice dog to the chute in this manner
because it could prove difficult to train the dog to come back to you or
to turn after the chute if this is the only way he learned the obstacle.
Adding an obstacle before the chute T The next stage of this training adds
a jump before the shortened chute, just close enough not to add extreme
speed to the performance of the closed tunnel as in Figure 5. If you are
trying to correct a chute performance problem as we were with Joe, 4 Place
a low jump about 12' closer for small dogs away from the end of the chute.
Throw a toy as the dog also place a jump or a 6' open tunnel immediately
following the chute. Continue to reward the dog after the obstacle
following completes the jump after the chute or place a target the chute.
If you are training a novice dog, just place a target at the end of the
chute or throw the toy to that spot. after the jump. Transitioning to a
full-length chute Increase the length of the chute just 6 at a time. Have
an assistant hold up the end of the chute or use a tenting device for T
the initial repetitions each time you lengthen the fabric. Still reward
the dog at the end of the open tunnel with a thrown toy, or place a target
like a mat, duct-taped phone book, a cone, or a Treat & Train so that you
can click and treat rather than T throwing a toy at the end of the dog's
performance. While Joe's training progressed very quickly because he was
entered in a national event soon after we started this training, I 5 Place
a jump before the short chute. If you are would encourage you to take at
least a month to transition to a full-length chute using these methods.
retraining a dog with a problem chute performance, also place either the
