Course Diagram Keys Letter to the Editor Dear Clean Run, I loved Gayle H. Jaeger and Sherman O. Canapp’s article, “Carpal and Tarsal Injuries.” This is a great series which I hope you continue! I have a question for the writers of the article: Would you use carpal support wraps on healthy young dogs as a preventive measure against carpal injuries, or would you only use them for dogs that have had a carpal injury? Thank you! Amanda Nelson Dear Amanda, We posed your question to Dr. Canapp and this was his response: “I would not use carpal support wraps as a preventative measure because they do also restrict flexion, which will eventually alter the way the dog uses his upper leg and possibly predispose him to other injuries. I think when a problem is present the benefits of carpal support wraps outweigh the risks, but it’s not worth it with a normal, healthy dog.” We also spoke with Ilaria Borghese, an orthotist with Thera-Paw, Inc., and she commented, “Most carpal wraps currently available are specifically designed for dogs with injuries, to restrict movement and offload the carpal joint. These wraps should not be worn during performance as they will restrict flexion and may cause the dog further injury. There are, however, light carpal wraps (such as the Carpo-Flex Sports Wrap) which are specifically designed to be used during performance. The CarpoFlex Sports Wrap was produced in cooperation with Dr. Christine Zink (www.caninesports.com) and is designed to provide light support and protection without restriction.
