This month we focus on the basics. It’s as easy as 1-2-3! Use this skill drill for yourself or with your classes to help identify and focus on those skills that need the most attention. even maCH dogs need work on the basics. This skill drill forces you to focus on areas that need improvement, and makes students more attentive and responsible for their own skill development. The layout for the drill is shown in Figure 1. The guidelines are simple: on your first turn you are allowed to do one obstacle; second turn, two obstacles; third turn, three obstacles; and so on. Two other requirements are to run with intensity and to do a cross during each turn. each person gets to choose her own sequences. as an instructor, I was interested to see what each student identified as a problem area. for example, on the one-obstacle turn, one student did a down-stay lead-out in front of a tunnel and rewarded the dog for not breaking. another did weaves but drove hard into a front cross while the dog was weaving. another did just a first jump but rewarded acceleration off the start line. and because handlers only had one obstacle to work on, they got to do their one obstacle at least three times for rewards. one student chose her obstacles so she could practice rear crosses all night long, and by the end of class both she and the dog showed marked improvement. each class built up to a series of five to six obstacles of the handler’s own choosing. and since each turn had so

few obstacles, handlers could repeat and reward several times. again, running with intensity made the drills fast, and rewarding the dogs often made them more responsive. I had suggestions for students who were unsure how to choose what to focus on, based on the team’s weaknesses. The suggestions I had for different teams are reflected in the sequences outlined in Figures 2 and 3. Remember: Students chose which parts of figures 2 and 3 to focus on (based on skills), they ran with intensity, and they used a cross in each turn. So choose from figures 2 and 3 accordingly if you get stuck deciding which skills to focus on. We ended the class with another drill that focused on jump skills. It was a com3
