Work your entries independently "around the clock," starting your dog from one position while you stand at a different position.

It’s important that the dog exits straight out of the barrel; it’s just as important that the dog only exits out a body length as you don’t want him to explode out of the chute. I now work my chute entries “around the clock” just like I do with my weave entrance training. Once I have worked all entrances around the clock with my dog near me as shown in Figure 4, I move away from my dog and work the entrances independently as illustrated in Figure 5. Finally, I proof my chute entrances with motion by sending the dog around a cone to start the exercise rather than starting him from a sit. Once the dog is returning from the cone, you can work any of the angled entrances you’ve already trained as shown in Figure 6. Watch your dog head toward the entrance, as soon as he is committed to the chute, pull away while

still supporting the entrance. As in all my barrel training, I reward my dog when he is a body length out of the chute.

Stay in Your Lane
In order to teach the dog to run down the center of the fabric “sleeve,” rather than follow the edge, my dog needs to understand the concept of lanes on a highway. When I work with my dog on his initial foundation training I teach him how to stay in line with me at my side, without cutting me off by going in front of my feet or going behind me. Start this exercise by laying barriers on the floor. You can use 2x4s, jump bars (see Figure 7), jump bumps, or even fences. With your dog on one side of the barriers and you on the other, walk along and reward the dog for staying on his side of the barriers. You want to move at a consistent speed because if you decelerate, the dog will turn and come in toward you. When you reward, throw a treat toward the dog so he gets the treat on
