powerful and what
you tell yourself is
very important.

She reminds us to always
praise and reward your
dog after a run whether it
is qualifying or not. “As we
all know, the dogs have no
concept of ribbons or titles;
they just want us to be
happy with them and enjoy
the time spent together.”
While it is important to
work on improving skills
in agility, everyone agrees
that the mental game is
the difference between
consistent success and
mediocre performance in
competition. Learning ways
to overcome stress or anything that distracts from
focus in the ring will insure
that you and your dog
can consistently give your
best performance. Staying
positive before, during, and
after your run means that
you have the best opportunity for success both now
and in the future. D

Juliet Franzen lives with her husband, Robert, and two dogs, Marcel and Kai on
the Central Coast of California. She graduated from the University of California
at Santa Barbara with a BA in Philosophy and an MA in Public and Social Affairs.
After working as a Financial Consultant for 17 years, she retired to spend her

sometimes the reasons
handlers lose focus are
beyond anyone’s control,
such as the A-frame being
the wrong height or the
timer not working. Even
worse is hearing a whistle
after you have started
running because there is
some sort of problem. She
suggests trying not to give
too much attention to the
delay. Sometimes it is better to leash up your dog
and leave the ring until
everything is ready to go.
Depending on your dog,
you might decide to run a
little later if you are given
the choice. Not becoming
distracted by the problem
is the way to ensure you
are in the right frame of
mind to have a good run.
