Front crosses will be the featured handling maneuver for this month’s article,
as well as some pinwheels, serpentines
and even back-side jumps for additional
challenges. As you run these, look for
ways to assist your partner in traveling
smooth paths that quickly put the next
obstacle into view.
Figure 1: This is a front cross drill from
start to finish, with two variations for #2.
For white #2, set up your dog at an angle
facing jumps #1 and #2, then lead out to a
stationary position near the front left post
of #2 and face your dog. Using your left
arm, guide your dog over #2 while stepping laterally to your right and pulling
your dog inside you toward #3. Do front
crosses after #3 and #4. Be a bit patient as

your dog performs the tunnel so you can
race with him to #7 and cue extension into
the pinwheel. Slide across for a final front
cross after #9 to drive the dog into the tunnel at #10. For the black #2 option, lead
out to just before the right post of #2. Call
your dog to your right hip while facing
forward, then push him around the back
with a Back, Push, or Around command
and then do a landing-side front cross off
#2 to pull your dog through the uprights.

#2. It’s acceptable, perhaps even preferable, if the dog lands slightly long to get
a nice angle back lining up #3 to #4. If
you feel comfortable with a lateral send
to #2, you should have time to do a front
cross after #3, which then sets up another

front cross after #4. If, however, your dog
needs more assistance to #2, you may
have to do a post turn at #4 going right.
Practice both options; better yet, time
both to determine what is best for you as
a team. A front cross or blind cross executed out of the tunnel will set you up
nicely for the pinwheel from #7-#9.
Figure 3: Your dog will be on right for
#1-#5. Follow #5 with a front cross to set
up a right turn after #6. The flow for #7#9 is much better with a right turn at #6.
A front cross after #8 is possible for quick
handlers, but if you are late and the dog
is forced to slow down and add strides
to get around you, then a wiser choice
would be a rear cross to #9. The pinwheel
#10-#12 will be with your dog on right.
