Methodology: Handling Techniques

Our first instructional agility DVD went
on sale in 2005. It was called Just Handle
It, Don't Make Assumptions. It included
16 different handling techniques (maneuvers) we had identified at the time.
Most of these techniques I learned by
trial and error while training and trying
to learn to communicate with my deaf
dog Tekla in agility. In 2007 we published our second handling DVD From
Puppy to Champion. In that DVD we
introduced parts of our basic training
methods at the time, some enhanced
handling techniques from the first DVD,
and four additional techniques. About
half of the techniques we use today
have been in our handling "palette," in
some shape or form, for over a decade.

New Challenges, New Techniques
Challenges we have encountered on
European-style courses since then have
motivated us to come up with better ways to teach and cue tight turns,

teach jumping skills, and solve various
kinds of sequences involving backside
jumps. The ideas behind some of the latest techniques have come partly from
different instructors such as Tuija Saari
and Anja Lehtiö (reverse wrap and human arrow), Krisztina Kabai (Kabai-blind
cross), and Ann Croft (American turn
a.k.a. forward send), and partly from
moves we have seen someone do at the
FCI Agility World Championships (Japanese and German turn). We have tested
the techniques with our own dogs and
modified them to fit our handling palette. We try to figure out the best way to
execute the individual techniques from
the dog's point of view and make sure
that all the different elements of handling are not in conflict with each other
(see the OMD article on basic handling
elements in CR February 2014).

The Earliest Handling Techniques
The rear cross and front cross are the
first handling techniques I learned in

the 90s. When giving seminars all over
the world, we have noticed that these
two techniques seem to be among the
hardest ones for handlers to master,
even today. What makes the rear cross
difficult, at least in Finland, is that most
handlers are staying in front of the dog
throughout the course so they don't
use rear crosses or teach them to their
dogs. The skill and understanding of
the basics of handling the dog from
behind is getting rarer.
Overall, we have noticed that handlers are doing great executing different types of handling maneuvers with
backside jumps and blind changes,
even though they weren't familiar
with the techniques before. But by far,
the most diﬃcult technique to perform
correctly all over the world is the front
cross! It's one of the first techniques
ever invented, yet it remains one of
the most challenging ones to do fluently and effectively. Poorly executed or late front crosses can result in
