Shaping vs. Luring

So what is shaping, how do we do it, and why on earth would we want to?
Shaping is a way of getting a behavior by reinforcing the animal for taking successive, small steps toward a goal
behavior-rather like the game we played as children, "getting hotter, getting colder." So, in effect, we are playing
this game with our dogs.
But why would we want our dogs guessing what we want
them to do? Surely it's better just to show them? Maybe use
a lure to get the behavior and then reward it or just place the
dog in the position we want and then reward that? Wouldn't
that be quicker?
Well, we certainly can get behaviors in those ways. On rare occasions, I do use a lure to get a behavior started. When teaching Left and Right, for instance, I usually lure the first couple of
turns, then lose the lure and use a hand signal before changing
the hand signal to a verbal cue. (I am also careful to reinforce
every successful repetition of the behavior that I am teaching.)
However, if we always lure or place our dogs when teaching
them new behaviors, we will soon create passive partners who
wait for us to show them how to proceed, or who will not do
anything without a piece of cheese dangling in front of their
nose! This makes getting those much-coveted independent
weaves and contacts more challenging!

A common misunderstanding about clicker training is that a
dog trained with treats or toys as reinforcers will not perform in
the ring without these. Nothing can be further from the truth,
as I hope to clarify in this series of articles. There is a big difference between treats and toys being used as lures and prompts
versus using them as reinforcers.
An important note about luring and fear: Before moving on,
it is important to note that a dog's favorite treats are often used
by well-meaning trainers to tempt the dog to do something he
is a little fearful about. I caution you about this practice since it
is likely to have the opposite effect. Imagine someone offering
you $100 each time he pushed you into a room full of spiders
or snakes (name your poison!). Pretty soon you are going to
start thinking, "Oh, no. He has $100. What terrifying thing is he
going to try to make me do now?"
So, yes, if we place and lure our dogs in all our training we can
get them to do some behaviors, but we really will create the
