7. Reverse Flow Pivot (RFP)
This is more commonly called a threadle cue now, and it is a great handling
move to redirect the dog's attention
from what is ahead (obstacle focus) and
instead look to the handler for direction
(handler focus). It is a natural instinct
for a dog to focus and follow our movement regardless of our verbal cues.
Being aware of movement is critical for
their survival.
Picture a handler and dog approaching
a C-shaped tunnel from the left, with
the left tunnel entrance directly in their
path. The correct entrance is the right
side. If we say "tunnel" at this point, the
dog will continue forward and take
the left opening. The handler must get
the dog's attention off of the tunnel so
she can show him the path to the next
correct obstacle. This can be done by
turning toward the dog, waiting until
you see that you have his attention,
and then pivoting back to face the
original direction you were traveling.
The first step is like the beginning of
a front cross, so the dog is alerted to a
change in direction and to follow you
rather than continue forward. This pivot
calls the dog completely off the tunnel
and sets him dog up to see the correct
entrance of the tunnel.
8. Jumping
A handler's movement and body position in relation to a jump will affect the
speed of the dog, the angle at which
the dog takes the jump, where the dog
will land, and the dog's direction upon
landing. Your dog needs to have all of
this information before taking a jump.
If you cue this information successfully,
you will see that your dog's front feet
are pointing the correct direction when
he lands.
Joanne starts her pivot, and Claire turns toward her rather than going forward.
Joanne pivots back to her original direction of travel and redirects her dog to the
correct end of tunnel.
Some handling systems teach the dog
that from the handler's waist up is
what the dog is to do in the moment
and from the handler's waist down
tells the dog what is going to happen next. But, in general, if you run
beyond the jump stanchion, your dog
will jump long and continue running.
If you turn in toward your dog as he is
approaching the jump (takeoff side)
and do not pass the stanchion, he will
slow down and jump short.
Jump chutes are a great way to build
your dog's confidence in his ability to
maneuver his body to clear jump bars.
I've seen many dogs stop short of taking a jump, but after doing some jump
chutes, they will take the same jump
without hesitating.
