that there are obstacles on the course.
I can identify where and when setting
the line will be harder, or even not possible, but I never stop looking for all the
places I need to try my best. My dog
relies on this, and I need every chance I
can get to practice this skill. If I am behind my dog, I still set the line, but I will
also be using verbal commands to tell
my dog where to go next.

When I set a line, I am trying to include
as many obstacles down the line as I
can with that first single foot plant. If a
sequence has no turns or gentle ones,
I might be able to set a reasonable line
for three to five jumps at once. I love it
when that happens.
I must also take into consideration the
"lane" I travel in when setting lines. This
just means how close or far away from
the dog's path I run. I work hard not
to change lanes unnecessarily when I
handle my dog just as I do when I drive
my car. If you handle too close to an
obstacle and have to pull around it (a
wing on a jump is a classic example), you
may change the line with your direction
change when you did not want to. You
will affect your dog, just like you affect
other drivers when your driving plan is
substandard. See Figure 5 for an example of line-setting in the correct lane.

Both handlers are setting the line out of the tunnel and the
timing is correct -- before the dog exits! But notice that the
handler in A has set her line while traveling in the correct lane,
which allows her space to pass the wing without changing her
path. The handler in B is trapped by the wing. When she tries
to go around it, she'll change the line and cue the off-course
jump. Now you see how to set BOTH of these lines well!
