Jumping Style: What Is It and Can You Teach It?

The clearest demonstration of jumping style comes from the horse world.
Compare the National Hunt horses jumping with the show jumpers. Note the flat trajectory of most
jumps in the racing world; the horse
will approach at a gallop and use that
speed to propel him across the jump.
Make no mistake, they still have to
jump-some of the racing jumps
are enormous-but it's a very different technique from showjumping. Showjumpers are mainly taught
to jump from a trot, often with poles
placed out to help them find their
takeoff or sweet spot for the jump.
The horse's lack of speed forces him to
jump from his rear to his front, producing that beautiful bascule across
the poles. Properly done, the horse's
takeoff distance will mirror his landing distance, with the pinnacle of his
jump arc centered over the pole.
In both dogs and horses, their rear
end is their powerhouse; all over
the world, you'll hear show jumping instructors yelling, "get the canter." What they are looking for is not
speed, but impulsion. They want the
horse properly engaged with his back
rounded, which enables him to bring
his quarters under ready for takeoff.
When riders allow their horses to get
"strung out" with their backs hollow,
the horse has little opportunity to engage his quarters, and then you'll see
the horse attempting to pull himself
across a jump rather than push. The
result isn't pretty, and the horse won't
be able to jump any height this way.
Back to dogs, the same applies. Dogs
are more flexible than horses and can
successfully jump today's agility jumps
using all kinds of techniques. Many
trainers are now understandably emphasizing speed, speed, speed, and
dogs are learning to jump long and flat
as their default jumping style. As long
as all the jumps are widely spaced to allow them room to land long, there's no
problem. But problems do arise when
a dog is jumping with his forehand
heavily loaded and his rear strung out
behind him-long and flat-and he is
faced with an unexpectedly small gap
between obstacles. He's in no position to collect, and it's then that you'll
see that horrible inverted back as the
dog tries desperately to shorten up and
keep the bar up.
