Handling in Configurations, Part 2
Pinwheels

Over the coming months, I will be
bringing you the continuation of
my One Jump, Two Jump program
from years back. I still love that
program, and I love that so many
handling techniques and so much
training can be accomplished on
just two jumps. My Three Jump,
Four Jump program builds on the
One Jump, Two Jump program,
and assumes that dogs working
these new exercises have the
benefit of the skills learned in the
original program.
The Three Jump, Four Jump
program adds jumps to form the
classic configurations and combinations of configurations that
make up sequences and courses.
My theory is that if you practice consistent handling of the configurations,
and you can spot the configurations on a course, you will become a consistent handler with a dog that can read you.
Pinwheels are a common configuration at most trials. There are many
ways to handle pinwheels, depending on where you are coming from and
where you are going next. But before we look at different ways to handle
pinwheels, let me shed some light on tricky little jump #2 of the pinwheel.
The Truth About Jump #2
The thing to know about jump #2 is that performing it is physically challenging for the dog. So, I use the practice jump to do a "jump #2 of the
pinwheel" warm-up before every run, as shown in Figure 1. This tells me
how my dog is feeling. I can see if he can turn comfortably on an angled
jump both to the left and right. It also reminds him to lift his rear legs as
he jumps and turns.
Configuration #2: Pinwheels
Once you understand the complexities of jump #2 of the pinwheel, you
are ready to take on pinwheel handling. When you do, you will benefit

I am always helping handlers spot these configurations. If the angles of the jumps are different from
the classic formations, it can get tricky. Obstacles other than jumps can also fool handlers into not seeing the configuration.
If you look hard for the configurations, you will start to see them everywhere, but it won't happen overnight. When I first challenged myself to master the "find the configurations in the course" game,
I sometimes discovered them only as a result of my handling choice when I walked the course.
If I was handling a section of the course like I would normally handle a serpentine, I would discover
that it was indeed a serpentine.
After reading this article, I suggest taking out some old course maps and looking for configurations.
Circle them as you would on a word find puzzle.
