and tell him to track. Watch him scent his way through the course lifting his nose just long enough to make it over the jumps. While Cider may not actually think we are out to retrieve birds, the drive mechanism for that activity must be active on a morning such as this. This energy surely carries over to her agility run. On other cool mornings both at home and at shows Cider is more energetic. But it is not every cool morning that Cider goes Ms. Hyde on me. It sometimes happens at an indoor trial and sometimes when it is warm, sometimes in the morning and sometimes in the afternoon, sometimes on the first day of a trial and sometimes on the second, sometimes on the first run and sometimes on the second. If it were just on cool mornings I could prepare, but this seemingly random transformation keeps me guessing. time for a long walk, and you have great runs. Other dogs may have the opposite response to this arrangement. We may think bringing their crate into the hotel room helps them feel at home. We turn the TV on to Animal Planet and say, “I’ll be right back” as we close the door to go out for dinner. The dogs hear “blah, blah, blah” and think, “They never leave the TV on at home. This room smells funky, and what did that look of guilt on her face mean?” When Sunday morning comes, this dog is not focused on agility. This dog is worried about getting locked in that room again. I have not found a pattern or a particular thing that regularly turns Cider from Ms. Jekyll to Ms. Hyde. I entertain the notion she is secretly developing potions in a hidden doggie laboratory. She is wearing a white coat and black-rimmed safety glasses. A Bunsen burner heats a colorless, odorless liquid. Cider carefully measures ingredients from the vials and test tubes. She gently stirs the potions as the ingredients are added. Puffs of odorless smoke billow from the beaker. It has to be odorless otherwise I would know the location of the secret lab. The potion is distilled and loaded into tiny capsules that fit in between the pads of her paw. What I dismiss as a dog licking her paw is actually Cider’s crafty way of popping her pills. Maybe she gives them to other dogs, promising them speed, acceleration, and a ripping good time, never before had on an agility course. Yes, I can see it now: Cider’s MACH-speed mixture—guaranteed to make you fly. Then I realize there is no way Cider could button up a lab coat. Discerning a Pattern— Is Predictability a Myth? Cider is not phased by car rides, hotel rooms, or the weird stuff you see on Animal Planet. She probably is not making or taking MACH-speed potions. Is it possible Cider can have good days and bad days just like us? After all, dogs are human, too. Generally if it is warm and sunny, my spirits are high. I can generalize that on cool mornings Cider is high-spirited. I should expect to handle her more assertively and try to match her energy. Verbal commands should be a bit crisper and perhaps a little louder. Body language needs to be exaggerated. A quicker, deeper turn of the shoulder around a pinwheel or a full arm extension and a step is needed, where before a slight push with the forearm sufficed to indicate the far end of a tunnel. Cider is less likely to be the overzealous Ms. Hyde on really hot days. The heat seems to take a little spring out of her step. I typically remind her to get up and over the jumps. But she takes direction more readily so my calls can be softer. Now I can use variations in my voice to reflect the degree of response necessary: a soft Here for a gentle turn and a louder Come for a sharper turn. Can Cider also have bad days when she usually has a good ones? Even though it is sunny, perhaps my favorite basketball team lost their game the night before and my spirits are low. And there are days when for no particular reason I wake up grumpy. Why can’t dogs have those days as well? This is the reverse Jekyll and Hyde. On a cool, sunny morning in Charlotte, North Predicting the Phenomenon I am not alone in this quest to understand how and when this happens. We all have ideas about what makes our dogs veer from the agility task at hand. Fortunately Cider loves to ride in an automobile, but some dogs do not. If you travel a couple hours to a show Saturday morning, your dog may be anxious to get out of auto confinement and run. Chances are you left home very early in the morning. There was time to pack the car and potty the dogs, but no time for the morning walk. Reining in the “I’m free, I’m free” exuberance is challenging. You stay in a hotel close to the show site Saturday night and Sunday the morning ritual is restored. You and your dog are well-rested, there is Cool Puppy Panels • Reflect away the sun’s hot rays • Allow fresh air flow • Reduce heat build-up under your tent, in your vehicle, and in crates or x-pens by up to 14° Dogs don’t get much cooler than this!
