The Judge’s Debriefing By Jerry McKenzie Canine Performance Events is a fun venue to enter. They offer many titles in games and standard classes. The folks who are competing help each other, the way it once was in agility. The fun is back! Being invited to judge at your home club is always exciting and somewhat nerve-wracking at the same time. I was ask to judge our CPE trial on March 3 and 4, 2007. Being a fairly new CPE judge, I certainly wanted to do well at home. I was lucky to know most of the handling teams as well as the volunteers, and I would like to thank all who made this trial a fun, memorable event. Special thanks go to Mary Beam, veteran CPE judge for all the great advice and supervision and to Sonja Davis for all her help. Clermont County Dog Training has a nice, new climate-controlled building with rubber matted ﬂoors located just north and east of Cincinnati, Ohio. Being indoors takes away the weather problem. In fact at one time on Saturday, I could not see the parking lot for the snow falling. We started Saturday with FullHouse, then on to Wildcard, Jackpot, and ﬁnished with Standard. On Sunday we started with Standard, Colors, Snooker, and Jumpers to end the day. Please see the CPE website, www.k9cpe.com, for full explanations of all available games and rules. Here are my courses and comments for FullHouse. FullHouse is an interesting game. In FullHouse all levels run the same course. You really cannot have a wrong course, but you can run the course and not get enough qualifying obstacles. You are required to complete the following sets: • Three of a kind = three single-bar jumps worth 1 point each • Two of a kind = two “circles” (tunnel, tire, chute) worth 3 points each • One Joker = Contact, weaves, broad, double, or triple worth 5 points These sets equal 14 points. The team then has to accumulate the remaining points needed to qualify, which range from 17 to 25 points, based on your respective level. The course time is divided into two time periods. You have a point accumulation time, then a whistle. After that whistle you have up to 5 seconds to direct your dog to the table and stop the clock. You don’t have to wait for the whistle to go the table; once you have accumulated the required points, you can go to the table at any time during the run to stop the clock. All obstacles may be successfully scored no more than two times. Back-to-back obstacles are allowed. The teeter, broad jump, double, triple, and chute may be taken twice in a row, but the dog must make a complete loop and approach the obstacle in the correct direction. If an obstacle is faulted, the team will not receive points for that obstacle (bar down, missed contact).
