Agility Organization Compiled by Brenna Fender American Kennel Club By Sharon Anderson Once the AKC Agility Nationals were over, the next agility event to excite the fancy was the AKC World Team Tryouts. This event, held in Hopkins, Minnesota, proved to showcase the best of the best.The trip to Norway for the World Agility Championship on September 28-30, 2007, will be with a mixture of experienced and new dogs/handlers. The teams consist of • Small (14" jump height): Dara, Shetland Sheepdog, Melanie Del Villaggio; Kelsi, Shetland Sheepdog, Dee Ann Gamel; Wave, Shetland Sheepdog, Marcy Mantell; Chase, Papillon, Andrea Samuels • Medium (18" jump height): Sizzle, Shetland Sheepdog, Karen Holik; Skye, Shetland Sheepdog, Lori Michaels; Guess, Shetland Sheepdog, Jennifer Crank; Sadie, Shetland Sheepdog, Allison Parr • Large (26" jump height): Jive, Border Collie, Carrie Jones; Spree, Border Collie, Ann Braue; Stellar, Border Collie, Linda Mecklenburg; Jester, Border Collie, Daisy Peel USA supporters are invited to travel with the team to Hamar, Norway. After the World Agility Championship, the next large event on the horizon is the AKC Agility Invitational. Plan ahead to travel to Long Beach, California, for the December 1 and 2, 2007, event. The top ﬁve MACH-pointed dogs of each breed are invited to compete. Also, FCI Kennel Clubs receive an invitation to send their three best dogs, one from each of the international competition height classes to compete. Judges from other major venues can apply to become an ASCA agility judge. Visit www.asca.org and download the agility rulebook for more information on how to apply. A few changes have been made to the rulebook in the following areas: • FEO: Family members of a judge may show under the judge “for exhibition only.” Previously, family members were not allowed to show at all. The rule was changed to allow family members to run their dogs but the runs won’t count toward any qualiﬁers. • Equipment Specifications: The equipment requirements allow clubs to use equipment approved in other major agility venues. This gives clubs more options in obtaining equipment for their trials. Refer to the appendix in the rulebook for speciﬁc information. The number of ASCA agility trials is steadily increasing. In the ﬁrst half of 2007, there were 46 ASCA-sanctioned agility trials. ASCA agility offers fast and ﬂowing courses. Dogs and handlers love it. The atmosphere is laid back and competitors have a great time. If there is an ASCA agility trial in your area, stop by and have a great time with your dog! The Eastern Regional Championships are being hosted by Southern Connecticut Agility Team and will be held in Hamden, Connecticut, while the Western Regional Championships are being hosted by DOCNA and will be held west of Phoenix in Buckeye, Arizona.The judge for the Eastern Championships will be Judy Boone from Salt Lake City, Utah, and Art Malott from Ontario, California, will judge the Western Championships.For complete information on the DOCNA National Championships,please refer to the premium or the DOCNA Championships page on the website, www.docna.com. You can download the premium from www.docna.com/Premiums.aspx. In June there were over 350 dogs qualiﬁed to enter the national event (the North America Challenge). Additionally, there is a package of regional events that competitors may enter that include two rounds of Standard agility and ﬁnals, two rounds of Jumpers and ﬁnals, Traditional Gamblers, Strategic Time Gamble, Snakes N Ladders, and Trigility. The Eastern Regional Championships will be held at the Paws ’N Effect facility and will offer indoor crating and vendor setups.The location for Western Regional Championships will allow us to have spectator stands to accommodate about 300 people. In addition, several rescue organizations have been invited to help educate the public on agility and responsible dog ownership.
