Clean Run Magazine - August 2008 - 20

Christine Frank Taking a dog off the course would be my last resort and would depend on my dog’s motivation level. I would suggest foremost that you make sure your dog understands both the two-on/two-off position and to wait for the release. It sounds like your dog knows the two-on/two-off behavior, but does he also know to wait for the release? Next, I would suggest you proof the behaviors. While he’s holding his twoon/two-off position, you can run by, throw toys, and so on. I’ll even place my dog’s dinner bowl (covered with plastic wrap so he can’t eat it if he breaks) past the contact, ask for the behavior, and then send him to the bowl. You say he does the two-on/two-off with great precision which is wonderful, but does he love to do it? Make it fun for him. Play chase me games, throw toys to him and away from him, and give him the jackpot when he does the behavior correctly. When he breaks, use a verbal correction. I’ll say “Uh-oh” or “La-la-la.” I try to use words that won’t come out harshly—it’s just a verbal cue that marks the wrong behavior. Use your word consistently. Also, you should use a verbal cue that marks the correct behavior. Make sure you are very consistent in your criteria for your two-on/two-off and release, and stick to it when training and Christine has been involved in dog training over 30 years. She has put agility titles on over 15 dogs of different breeds, temperaments, and sizes. Her dogs’ accomplishments include an AKC National Agility Championship, three AAC National Championships, an ESPN Gold Medal, and being a World Team member. Contact her at MiHotdogs@aol.com. when showing! At trials, ring nerves, wanting to Q, and the overall atmosphere can often dilute the requisites for your criteria. Sometimes the dog’s infraction is so minute you don’t even notice it. Then the behavior deteriorates more and more until you have a full-blown problem. Nip it in the bud now. Make having a good contact performance your goal over the next few trials. I would first use a verbal cue to mark his two-on/two-off performance as being either correct or incorrect and I would continue the course. If you’re still not getting the behavior you want after a few trials, stop and mark the behavior. This might get you whistled off for training in the ring, but walking off the course stops your run for sure. With just stopping and marking, there’s a chance you can continue on to work the next contact. I would try this for a few trials. If that fails then I would walk my dog off the course (after marking the error), walk him to his crate, and ignore him for a little while. The most important thing I can say is to be consistent and very black and white. It’s unfair to the dog, especially in his beginning agility career, to let him change or offer different behaviors and let him think that’s okay. It’s also very important to get back the two-on/two-off performance in trials as soon as possible. The more the behavior deteriorates, the harder it will be to get it back. One mistake takes you many steps backward. Make sure you are very consistent in your criteria for your two-on/twooff and release, and stick to it when training and when showing! At trials, ring nerves, wanting to Q, and the overall atmosphere can often dilute the requisites for your criteria. I would not walk my dog off if he has a motivation problem. In my opinion it’s a lot harder to get back motivation than a contact performance. In this case I would stop showing my dog and work on his contacts more before trialing again. I would also take into consideration the fact that it may be a hardship for my dog to assume a two-on/two-off position, especially on the A-frame. Some dogs, because of the way they are built, have an extremely hard time. In this case I would consider other performance options like “four on the floor” or running contacts. You should also work on these issues at fun matches. It’ll be a lot cheaper. Unfortunately, some dogs have learned that the rules are different at trials so you have to be at trials to work them out.
