Step 1 Hold the hoop against the wall with the bottom edge on the ground and lure the dog through the hoop with a piece of food. As the dog steps through the hoop, toss the treat on the ground ahead of the dog so that he comes all the way through the hoop to reach the treat. Repeat several times until the dog is comfortably moving through the hoop on the ground. By Sassie Joiris, photos by author Jumping Through Hoops and Through Arms A classic trick, jumping through arms is a fun way for the dog to warm up and focus on the handler before a run. It doesn’t require any props, so you can use it anywhere with a soft surface for the dog to land on. Learning to jump through arms is a skill that enhances the dog’s ability to perform the tire jump because it really encourages the dog to “look for the hole” rather than just find the lowest part of the hoop. Because the trick is done in a fairly small amount of space, the dog learns to jump in a collected manner, a skill that helps the dog wrap around jumps on the agility field. Jumping through hoops is a good precursor to jumping through arms. With a good-sized hoop it’s a simple trick that’s fun and easy to master. Hula Hoops are inexpensive, easy to find, and come in a variety of diameters from 24" to 36". With small dogs you can use a large embroidery or quilting hoop. You can also fashion a hoop out of plastic tubing for a custom diameter. The educational supply website, www.ssww.com, sells Spectrum plastic hoops that are much sturdier than Hula Hoops but are only available by the dozen. Jumping Through a Hoop To teach this trick you’ll need to work against a wall; it can be outside or inside, but the ground needs to be soft and cushioned enough for the dog to land on after jumping. You’ll also need the hoop and lots of treats. Because the treats will eventually be tossed on the ground, choose treats contrasting in color to the surface you’re throwing them on. Tricks Agility for Step 2 Sit the dog facing the hoop and raise it a few inches off the ground, keeping it against the wall. Lure the dog forward with a piece of food and toss it on the ground on the other side of the hoop as the dog starts to go through the hoop. Continue to raise the hoop as the dog gains confidence and ability. Once you’ve reached the height you want the dog to jump, start to move the hoop away from the wall. Continue to use your hand with a treat in it to focus the dog on the center of the hoop.
