of all unbalanced class dilemmas. There are three separate scenarios to consider when a dog can’t perform a particular obstacle in a sequence. The first is the easy one to address: The dog understands how to perform the obstacle but the handler has simply mishandled the obstacle, usually the approach. Since you are teaching a handling class it is appropriate to address handling, even if the handler mishandles the same obstacle often. Remember, any obstacle can be some team’s handling nemesis, even the tunnel. The student may need your help time and again. You tell her the proper way to cue or approach it, then she is successful, and you look brilliant. The other two scenarios can make you pull your hair out. The second shows us a dog that struggles with the same obstacle repeatedly, although he was initially trained well enough to perform the obstacle properly, or at least satisfactorily, and now he isn’t. The dog’s comprehension of the performance has been tested to the point of failure. So what else is new? When this happens (as it often does), we jokingly refer to it as the “the wheels coming off.” Experienced handlers know that it is just another opportunity to increase the dog’s level of understanding of the task at hand. Do not let your student become fearful. Following are some possible reasons for unsatisfactory obstacle performance: — Dog was never trained well to begin with — Dog is picking up speed at the risk of accuracy — Dog has started entering trials and has had his new ring criteria unintentionally introduced to him (much to the dismay of his handler and his handler’s instructor) Teaching a Class Divided by Lack of Obstacle Skills By Sandy Rogers In previous articles, we have looked at general problem solving for the instructor teaching the unbalanced class as well as implementing solutions for classes with students who have a wide variety of obedience or foundation skills. In this article, we will tackle missing obstacle skills, a problem that plagues many classes. Once again we assume that you are teaching an agility handling or sequencing class, not a beginner obstacle training class. •••••••••••• — Dog is stressed (some form of either physical or emotional discomfort) — The overall degree of difficulty of the sequence is making the behavior that was once simple more difficult The third scenario is the dog never learned the obstacle in the first place or is in the process of retraining. In either of these last two scenarios a big consideration is whether students have a way to get the training homework done. If they do, it may be best for them to skip that obstacle in class for a while until the training process is completed at home. If they do not have access to equipment you can try to solve that problem (rent or borrow equipment) as well as having some instructions for what they should do when they come to that obstacle in class (a quick fix that will not damage the final desired behavior). Here are some tips for addressing each of the obstacles. Is the problem entries or popping out? Whichever it is, after one or two failed attempts the handler should do a quick fix and then move on. Weave Poles Missed Entries Quick Fixes for Class — A simple solution is to have the handler put a hand in the dog’s collar and deliver the dog into and possibly all the way through the poles. — If handlers can get well ahead of the dog, they can literally grab the second pole if it is a left-side approach or the first pole for the right-side approach. Their arm then becomes a guide for the dog. — An efficient helper on course (not the instructor) is required for this next fix. A guide wire or two (not a full set) is placed on course near the poles. When the Clean Run | August 09 If you believe that every student deserves equal time on course you cannot let individual deficiencies in obstacle performance rule the class flow. When a dog cannot perform a particular obstacle in class you are facing the trickiest 60 Identifying the Problem
