MAINTAIN The Table

While some of this work is very similar to how the behavior is trained, these articles will not go into detail about how to train. These maintenance sessions are intended to be short and easy to set up while accomplishing quite a bit in a short period of time. » Equipment needed: A table in addition to 1 jump and/or 1 tunnel » Setup time: About 1 minute » Training time: 5-10 minutes » Recommended: Once every other month for most dogs. For dogs with table problems, once per week. In addition, if a dog has table problems, I recommend starting every agility training session with about 1 minute of table work. The dog learns that table work means agility training is coming and this can increase the value of the table. Another great way to practice additional table work is to put a table as the first obstacle of any drill or course work in practice. My expectations of my dog’s table performance are to get on the table and assume an immediate down position. If you need variable positions on the table, I still recommend teaching an automatic down as the default behavior. Then if you want the dog to sit or stand on the table, you can cue the position on the approach to the obstacle. For example, if you want an automatic down, you simply cue a verbal Table, or whatever word you choose. If you want your dog to sit, you cue him with Table, Sit. There are several behaviors that the dog needs to perform to execute the table correctly. The following behaviors are based on an automatic down. You may modify the training plan to include sits and/or stands on the table if desired. The behaviors are » Approach the obstacle when appropriately cued and collect just before getting on the table. » Stay on the table rather than bounce or slide off. Coming off the table is usually caused by a lack of collection on the approach.
