Deceleration Cues
1. Handler stands still; feet are square and flat-footed. 2. Handler physically slows down, with weight shifted back, and stops. 3. Verbal cues, such as Dig, override any and all physical cues, or when the dog cannot see the handler. Dog’s Behavior/Response All three cues should result in equal and identical behavior:

Reward The handler delivers the reward at the RZ (tugs with dog).

Groundwork
Let’s start our teaching of these cues away from the equipment. The steps below assume that your dog already has a strong desire for the reinforcement zone, can drive to a toy on the ground, and loves the game of tug. Acceleration Step 1: Start with the dog either on a stay or restrained by someone so you can lead out a bit from him. Toss a toy 15'30' in line with the direction you and the dog are facing as shown in Figure 2. Release the dog and run to the toy.Your dog should easily beat you to the toy.

But you need to keep running until he gets to the toy. Play tug with the dog as you walk back to the starting area. Repeat several times, varying your start position and switching sides with the dog. Your goal is that you can start next to the dog and he will run straight to the toy without looking back toward you. Step 2: This step requires a partner to hold onto the toy and to throw it.Working as above, the toy is now thrown in a direct line as you and the dog are running forward. The helper should only toss the toy when the dog’s head is forward. Have your training partner gradually increase the time for the reward to be delivered by waiting to throw the toy until the dog is running past you. Your partner should vary her position so that the dog is not keying off it.

Dog immediately adjusts stride in a manner as needed to get to the RZ as quickly and efficiently as possible, usually by shortening strides. Dog drives into RZ at handler.
