running around the course, identifying your dog’s commitment will become second nature.
So Why Lead-out Pivots?
Besides the obvious reason of placing
ourselves farther ahead on course from
the start, there are a couple other important reasons for using lead-out pivots:
• The dog can see where he is going
based upon your position and the line
he has been set on at the start. If you
lead out four obstacles to your positional cue, your dog will know his
path for approximately one-quarter
of the course, just while sitting there
on the start line.
• The lead-out pivot allows you to
practice and perfect front cross timing. After you lead out to the front
cross position, all that is necessary is
for you to look at the ground to identify the dog’s commitment (takeoff)
to the jump before doing the front
cross. You don’t need to worry about
running into position while trying to
keep your focus on where you are
going and where your dog is; you are
standing still watching for the perfect
commitment timing. Concentrating
only on watching your dog’s takeoff
• Lead-out pivots are crucial in helping
your dog understand the three front
cross cues—deceleration, positional
cue, and arm change—since these
cues can be broken down and rewarded individually as you will see.
Rewarding the Dog’s Collection
on the Lead-out
To reward your deceleration cue, lead out
to the positional cue, facing the direction
you want your dog to run. Release the dog
to do the jumps in his path and reward
him by throwing the toy back toward the
dog to grab just as he is landing from the
jump before the front cross as shown in
Figure 6. What you are rewarding is the
dog collecting, adjusting, and shortening
his stride just before this jump in response
to the fact that you are standing still. The
goal is to try to reward the behavior as
close to the response as possible without
causing the dog to refuse the jump. There-
