Clean Run - August 2014 - 52

Like most serps, #11-#13 allowed a variety of handling choices. There were a
few knocked bars on jump #12. Missed
weave pole entries did occur, but were
not overly prevalent. Only one or two
dogs took the off-course dummy jump
after #11. Jump #16-#18 was yet another
serp going into the ending sequence of
#19 and #20. As before, some went with
front crosses between #16 and #17 as well
as another after #18. Others ran this section with rear crosses, most doing their
rear crosses on the take-off side off side
of #17 and #19. A few handlers did landing-side rear crosses. A handful of exhibitors did a blind cross after #17 followed
with a front cross between #18 and #19, a
combination of crosses that worked very
well. All in all, from the chute to the end,
all methods of handling seemed to work
nicely. An occasional dog missed jump

#18 by turning too tightly and coming
between #17 and #18. A very, very few
took the off-course jump after #17.
Judging this course was a bit of a challenge. Avoiding being in the handler's
path between the tunnels did take some
thought. Being able to watch that dogs
were not incurring a wrong course by
touching the tunnel en route to the Aframe and then subsequently being in
position to judge the A-frame contact
took a few quick steps! The rest of the
course was comfortable to judge! When
our courses are reviewed by our AKC
Field Representative, our judge's path is
one of the many things evaluated. When
designing Standard courses, a good
judge's path can be a challenging part of
course design. I know I am not alone in
having come up with a great course that

simply cannot be judged because something in the design precludes a judge
from being in one or more necessary positions. A course that cannot be judged
might have some workable elements or it
might just be a great training course. Another consideration with this particular
course was walk-throughs; there was potentially a fair amount of congestion on
the right side of the course where three
jumps are each taken twice. Allowing
ample walk-through time and smaller
groups precluded any major traffic jams
and alleviated handler frustration.
I hope this course review has been interesting and I hope some of you can enjoy
trying out this course. It was a pleasure
to judge and teams seemed to have fun
