Figure 1 shows an AKC Excellent/Masters course designed by
Rod Ramsell for the Chattanooga Dog Agility Club's trial this
past April. As you can see in Figure 2, it's possible to take advantage of a long lead-out here! I leave my dog on a stay and lead
out to the landing side of jump #3. I use my left arm to indicate
jumps #1 and #2, as well my "Out, Over" command, and I start
to back up once my dog is committed to jump #3. I keep my left
arm up to indicate jump #4 and do a reverse spin (blind cross)
to bring my dog tight around the upright of jump #4, then I
send him to the teeter.
Once my dog completes the teeter, I send him to the panel jump
with an "Out, Over" command, using my right arm. As soon as
he is committed to the panel, I bring up my left arm to indicate
that I want him to come in to the A-frame, as shown in Figure 3,
rather than go straight to the table
There are two distance options from jump #8 to the table. The
first is shown in Figure 4. With my advanced distance skills, I
would choose to layer the A-frame. To accomplish this, I send
my dog over jump #8, using my right arm to cue the rear cross
as well as my verbal "Over, Right" command. I then immediately
bring up my left arm and tell him "Out, Weave." As soon as he
is committed to the weave poles, I leave and run along the right
side of the A-frame. Just before he finishes the weave poles, I tell
him, "Out, Tire." As he is headed for the tire, I give my "Table"
command. If you don't think your dog will stay in the poles
while you layer the A-frame, or go out to the tire, use the same
techniques, but run along the left side of the A-frame as you see
in Figure 5.
Next, I lead out from the table to the landing side of jump #12
as you see in Figure 6. I release my dog to the jump. Once he
passes the wrong opening of the tunnel, I use my left arm and
tell him, "Left." I bring up my right arm and send him to the
tunnel with a "Go, Tunnel" command. Once he is heading to the
tunnel, I simply back up a step and pick him up on my left side
to send him up the dogwalk.
After I catch up to him at the end of the dogwalk, I do a reverse
flow pivot (threadle) to get the correct end of the tunnel (I use
my right arm to pull him toward me and then my left arm to
send him to the tunnel). I call my dog's name while he's in the
tunnel and as he exits I pick him up with my left arm to send
him over jump #16. You can see this in Figure 7.
Jump #17 requires a rear cross. I use my left arm and an "Over,
Left" command to get the rear cross. I immediately bring up my
right arm to get jump #18 and then used my "Go On" command
to finish the course. D
