MY FAVORITE JUMPING Imagine that you are preparing for a big event but your agility equipment has vanished! All you have are two or three jumps. We asked top-level trainers from all over the country about what they would do under these circumstances. The exercises they offer are sequences you can do even if you have limited space and obstacles. This month's exercises are provided by Loretta Mueller. © cinDy noLanD Can you do these drills using the same obstacles but in a different order each time? I do these drills myself and with my students to ensure that the dogs are responsive and the handler's cues are very clear to the dogs so they instantly know what the handler wants, with no questions. These drills start with the dog on your left. Once you have worked these sequences with the dog on your left side, do the mirror image with the dog on your right. your left. Send to jump #2 and move out to jump #3. Figure 2 is a threadle. Dog is on your left. You can do a pull-through command to call the dog into the gap. Then rear cross on the flat on #2 to put the dog on your right side for jump #3. Or you can do a front cross between #1 and #2, which would put your dog on the right for #2 to #3. Try both! I prefer no lead-out, but if you need a leadout, 2-3 feet from your dog is all I allow. Figure 3 is a 180. Dog is on your left and you must show the dog not to take the off-course jump, but rather come into #2 after he lands off jump #1. Then move toward jump #3. Figure 1 is a pinwheel; just a typical line you would find in all levels and very easy for the dog to read. Dog starts on Figure 4 is a front cross. Dog is on your left. Or you can keep the dog on your left with a pull-through command and do a turn on the flat (rear cross on the flat) so the dog turns before taking off for jump #2. The dog will then be on your right for jumps #2 and #3. D 3 3 2 30 30 20 3 20 1 2 1 10 2 1 3 10 10 28 that the off-course jump is not an option.
