Her Rhyn was a different story. Though this Border Collie earned his USDAA Platinum Lifetime Achievement Award and an AKC MACH, won the National Performance Grand Prix in his height division, and came in sixth in the AKC National Finals, Sutherland felt he never loved agility. “He just loved doing something with me. He had accomplished everything I could ever have hoped for,” she explains. Though he was still physically able to compete, she says, “Now he is just as happy, walking and playing without the competition element. It was the right choice for him.” your dog is excited to come out of the crate and bounces around happily on the way to the start line, he is enjoying it. On the other hand, I believe that if you have to keep shoving treats in his mouth to get him around the course, then he isn’t having fun.” Karen Holik Karen Holik takes the long-term view when considering retirement for her dogs. “First, ask if the dog is healthy,” she advises. “You have to look at the overall well-being of the dog to be sure that you aren’t risking permanent injury.” Sez was her first Sheltie and was doing great in the ring. About seven years ago, she had an on-and-off lameness, however, that caused Holik to think it might be a partially torn cruciate ligament. “I was unwilling to continue to compete with her if there was a chance that two years later she would be so crippled she couldn’t use that leg,” says Holik. Her primary concern was that Sez live a long, happy, and comfortable life. She retired her, but let her come to trials, see her friends, and watch the runs, which she did happily. She is now 14 and walking comfortably. Health isn’t the only consideration for Holik. “This is a team sport. It’s something to do with your dog, for the two of you to enjoy together.” When her Chow/Sheltie mix, Simon, was 10, and they were on the way to the USDAA National Championships, she recalls, “I promised that I would never compete with him again. There was absolutely nothing wrong with him, but I retired him because I felt he was just doing it for me.” She realized that one run a month might make him excited, but other than that, he seemed just as happy to lie on the couch. “Listen to what they tell you. If © clean run How Will You Know? When it’s time to retire your dog, how will you know it? Look for physical signs of aging and pay attention to your dog’s attitude and performance. Keep up with physical conditioning and regular veterinary care. When it’s time to leave the ring for good, consider other activities that will enable you to maintain that special bond with your dog, and make him feel that he is still important. Remember, agility is a game and playing it should be a pleasure for both of you. D Sally Silverman is a freelance writer whose life has gone to the dogs. An avid equestrian who writes regularly for horse-related publications, she began agility eight years ago and is finally starting to get it! She and her husband share their hearts and their home with four Australian shepherds, including two rescue dogs. She trains and competes in both agility and canine freestyle, and enjoys playing Frisbee with the dogs as well. She is an active member of Y2K9s Dog Sports Club outside of Philadelphia.
