You can train your dog to read pressure through a simple exercise. Put six cones in a circle as shown in Figure 5. Start with the cones about 4' to 5' apart. You initially need to be close to the dog if you haven’t played this game before. Push your dog out around the first cone by putting pressure on his path: take a step toward his path and use a raised arm signal. Release the pressure, by stepping back and lowering your arm, and the dog should come in toward you between cones #1 and #2 as shown in Figure 6. Use pressure to push your dog out around cone #3, then release the pressure to bring your dog in between cones #3 and #4. Proceed like this around the circle of cones in a clockwise direction, rewarding your dog frequently. Put your dog on your right side and move him around the circle in a counterclockwise direction. Now, send your dog out around two cones and then bring him back in toward you. Continue that pattern, working your way around the circle of cones. Be sure to do it in the reverse direction, with your dog on your other side. Design patterns of your own. As your dog understands the game and your timing improves, put more distance between you and your dog by moving closer to the center of the cone circle and then moving the cones farther apart so the circle is larger. 5 6 Here is the setup for an exercise that will teach your dog about pressure on his path. The cones should initially be set 4' to 5' apart. Use pressure to push the dog out around a cone and then release the pressure to bring him back in toward you between the cones. Using Acceleration and Deceleration Another aspect of distance handling is the effective use of acceleration and deceleration. The concept is the same as what I would do if I were handling my dog close to me. If I want to drive my dog forward on his path, I will use forward motion or acceleration to push the dog forward. If I want to cue the dog to collect, I will use deceleration or slow my forward movement. Acceleration and deceleration cues work even when handling your dog at a distance. More Complex Distance Skills Here are some situations in which more complex distance skills are required. These skills can be trained by building on your distance foundation fundamentals. Combining Directional and Distance Elements In a NADAC Chances course, for example, the directional and distance elements of the challenge at the Elite level might include the dog taking a jump and then turning away from the handler to take another jump 20' away, with an off-course tunnel in the dog’s line of vision as shown in Figure 7. The challenges include cueing the change of direction, decelerating so as not to drive the dog into the tunnel, and putting pressure on the dog’s path to push him out to the jump at a distance. Here are the distance skills required for this four-obstacle sequence: ❍ ❍ 4 3 1 2 Dog will take a directional command and turn away from you Dog understands deceleration indicates you are not driving forward Dog can move 20' away from you and commit to a jump Dog can read pressure on his path and understands to stay out away from you 7 ❍ ❍ This NADAC Elite Chances sequence requires a number of distance skills.
