Unfortunately, very few of us with Pigs Fly dogs have independent weave pole performance on our dogs, so we will be stuck running stride for stride with our dogs out of the weaves. This situation actually creates a lead change from jump #3 to #4 that now has to be signaled to the dog. What to do? One option is to use a serpentine cue to get from #3 to #4. If you can’t get into position to bang your dog over the jump, try just dropping your inside shoul- der slightly and then turn forward again and send your dog out over the next jump just as if it was a “regular” serpentine. This sounds very advanced, but you may be surprised at how responsive your dog will be to this subtle cue, once he is trained in serpentines. Here is a sequence to illustrate this handling. Notice how Kitty turns in to me as I turn in to her in frame B. In frame C, I have just barely begun to bring my left shoulder forward again, and she starts changing direction; you can see her eyes have already found the next obstacle. As soon as I turn to face forward again, Kitty switches leads and drives to the next jump. Even though I can’t get into position to do a “real” serpentine, I can still control her lead with my body position. A B C D E Again, here is the same lead change done with Zulu. It takes a little more “push” for her to change her direction, but she gets it and the sequence works when handled this way. A B C Now you and your dog can slither through any sequence.
