When you release the dog, move forward on a diagonal line toward the tunnel and say Tunnel to send the dog forward to the #3 tunnel. While the dog is in the tunnel, move over slightly to get more lateral distance and to get on the landing side of #4. When the dog exits the tunnel, get direct eye contact with him and say his name. While doing that, move toward the tire so that the dog takes jump #4 and turns in the direction of your motion. You need to start this motion two strides before the dog takes jump #4. As soon as the dog can see the tunnel under the dogwalk, say Tunnel and continue to move forward toward it. Pick up your dog at the exit of the #6 tunnel to get him on the dogwalk, then start to pull away with lateral motion. Rear Cross In Figure 2b set the dog up on a diagonal line for the jump-jump-tunnel start with a good amount of lateral distance between you and the dog. When you release the dog, move forward on a diagonal line toward the tunnel and say Tunnel to send the dog forward to the #3 tunnel. While the dog is in the tunnel, move over slightly to get more lateral distance. When the dog exits the #3 tunnel, he should see you moving forward with a right arm out to send him to #4. As you say Jump, move toward the dog laterally on a diagonal line. Be careful not to intersect his line until he is jumping #4. Keep some lateral distance on the line to the tire. As you say Tunnel, move in laterally toward your dog again to let him know about the rear cross at the #6 tunnel. Pick up your dog at the exit of the #6 tunnel to get him on the dogwalk, then start to pull away with lateral motion. ExERCIsE 3 In the exercise shown in Figure 3, you will work on handling a straight tunnel with a push and with a rear cross. 8 Push 2B Verbal: "Tunnel" Motion: Forward 1 4 2 5 Verbal: Dog's name Direct eye contact Foward cue: "Walk It" 7 6 Push The sequence in Figure 3a starts with a jump to the #2 tunnel to give you a chance to be ahead of your dog for the push. When your dog is entering the #2 tunnel, run up beside the line from #3 to #4; your goal is to get to the back side of the #4 tunnel before the dog is landing from jump #3. When your dog is a stride before entering the tunnel (approximately 10' or so for a 20"/24" dog), use his name, direct eye contact, and an inside arm. With these cues, the dog goes into the tunnel expecting to come out on your right side. Rear Cross In Figure 3b instead of sending your dog to the #2 tunnel, you will move forward with your dog. When your dog exits the #2 tunnel, move forward toward jump #3 maintaining lateral distance from the jump. This gives you room to move in toward the dog with lateral motion, without intersecting his path, before he jumps #3.
