the wrap (tight Front Cross) First we’ll look at the basic turn with a wrap. I work on the wrap a lot, for both my dog and me. These turns build the connection with my dog and I also get to work on combining and balancing my cues, so the dog is wellprepared for the sharp turn and wrap. When you want to perform a wrap, which is a tight front cross, you should follow Jenny’s first rule and the landing rule. Also apply the jigsaw rule to clarify the direction of your motion. Since the dog should come back after the obstacle, you should never cross the obstacle plane (shown by a green dashed line) because that will push your dog forward and often cause wide turns. For the wrap shown in Figure 1, move ahead of your dog toward marker P (in a wrap this is always the wing on the opposite side of the direction of the turn) and keep your eye on your dog to maintain a good connection. Keep your arms close to your body so your dog keeps to his line and so he knows to expect a tight turn. When you reach marker P, turn your feet toward your dog (that is, in the same direction the dog should go after the jump) and move in the direction of the turn. All these are cues to prepare your dog to turn and should happen before the dog passes you. As you begin to turn your feet and move sideways, tell your dog to jump by using your driving shoulder and your hand pointing toward the jump, as well as one or more verbal cues to jump. The farther you move away from your dog, the clearer your driving shoulder and hand have to be to balance the situation. When your dog has landed and moved around the wing, change your hand, get your dog in toward you, and reward close to you on the new side. When training the wrap, make sure you can be ahead of your dog so he can clearly see what you are doing and so you can gain good control over the situation. Place your dog a bit behind you before you start, or make use of a tunnel to get ahead. After a while you’ll be able to do this with more distance and even when you are hanging back, but don’t do that until you feel in control of your cues and your dog trusts them.
