Putting It All Together
There is an apocryphal story that I was told and it relates to a number of different sports. For effect I have mixed, adapted, and embellished the story a little to highlight the problem with the degree of analysis that has gone into arriving at the conclusions described above. The disease of anal-ysis can be a dangerous thing! While waiting her turn to run a course an inexperienced handler (IH), having been through a PACE agility seminar, was talking to someone recognized as a top handler (TH). This is the conversation that followed. IH: I have been to a seminar recently that has taught me all I need to know about positioning and good timing. TH: Oh yeah, what have you learned? IH: I have learned to analyze what I am doing on course. During my run I am thinking about the position I am in and how that relates to the line my dog is taking. I think through what I can do next to keep the dog on the optimum line, and it helps me make decisions about my handling and what options I have in reacting to the different things my dog might do next. Having said all this, the inexperienced handler realizes she is getting a quizzical look in response and so asks another question. IH: What do you think about when you’re running your dog? TH: Kickin’ butt! Because, when I am concentrating and handling really well, I don’t think. Analysis, deep thinking, and practice are for the training field. Competition agility is about applying the lessons learned in practice so they happen instinctively, without the need to think the actions through.
Skill Drills
For the obstacle setups that follow, there are many skill drills you can practice; however, I have only highlighted the drills that relate to visual and spatial awareness. Exercise 1........................................... Setup: Set nine hurdles as shown in Figure 2. Drill: Try to complete the exercise in sequence using rear crosses only. Remember this is a skill drill, not a handling test.

2 2 Goals: In this exercise the dog is de8 8 pending on the handler’s visual and verbal cues and requires the handler 12 12 6 6 to be positioned precisely throughout. 7 1 1 7 Effective handler movement skills are required to keep the dog on the opti2 mum line for the next obstacle in the sequence. If handlers are badly positioned or time the verbal cue incorrectly, this usually results in an off-course deviation. The exercise can take some time to master but it teaches handlers a great deal about positioning and timing.
Variations: Vary the exercise by starting the handler on the opposite side of the sequence.
