that he is willing to continue to try and figure out what we want;
the lack of height in the grid also encourages the dog to seek the
correct behavior.

It isn’t that the dog is being “naughty,” he is simply creating
more speed than he can coordinate and thus is forced to omit
the space between #4 and #5 or exit the grid. Many handlers do
not want to reward their dog in this situation because a mistake
has occurred, but I reward the dog since he is still working. He
is simply trying to figure out what we want of him, plus he didn’t
exit the grid, he actually stayed on the correct path and finished
the line. So I reward the try. This doesn’t mean that you have
to give your dog the prize he most values, remember that there
is more than one level of reward. You can pet him, praise him,
or offer him a reward of lesser value. I always remind people in
agility seminars that in the horse world if a horse is unwilling
to try for us when we are asking him to take a jump so large he
cannot even see over it, we as riders have very few options to
change his mind! He needs to want to make the effort. Although
handlers often feel they should make the dog more aware of his
mistakes, I really feel the need to remind people that the dog
does not really know how to perform this task; it is practice and,
as such, mistakes should be expected.

Dog Cutting Out of the Grid
There are always a few dogs that are intimidated by a long line
of jumps (even at the low height) when the jumps are presented
so close together (compression). These dogs will often jump into
the first space, between jumps #1 and #2, and then exit the grid.
If this happens, I simply “forward chain” the grid by rewarding
the dog with his target prior to jump #2 and then rewarding
prior to jump #3. Once the dog is willing to jump #1-#2-#3, he

Remember to change sides frequently so that you work the
dog on your left and right; your dog should be comfortable
on either side of you.

The ladder grid is bidirectional and it is actually good to
let the dog practice going in both directions since what appears past the grid changes depending on the direction.

It is always your responsibility to create a positive, happy environment in
which your dog feels free to experiment with the task in order to truly own
his participation in the task. It will be trial and error for the dog just as with
us when we learn new tasks. So have fun with it!
