Cue then Move
With a couple of exceptions, such
as "Drop," most toy-specific cues
are best thought of as informational
signals that tell the dog what is about
to happen with the toy, not something the dog has to do to get the toy.
Although you can use toy cues to
strengthen helpful default behaviors,
such as standing still, offering eye
contact, or being quiet, in the early
learning phases, the onus is mostly
on you to deliver on the pattern of
reinforcement each cue represents.
This means making sure you have
practiced your skills. Consistent toy
tosses and clean tug toy presentation are key. Luckily, other than the
coordination needed for accurate
toy placement, the cue-conditioning
process is just about as basic as
"charging" a clicker. It involves one
of the most fundamental, and familiar building blocks of all positive
reinforcement training: the cue-thenmove pattern.
Cue then move operates under the
same rule structure as click then
treat. If you want your dog listening
to the auditory cue, as opposed to
just following the movement of your
hands or the toy, it is important he
always hears the cue first, and then
the toy moves or appears. "Go," for
example, is easily taught by saying
the word "Go" and then tossing either
a piece of food or a toy in more or
less the same spot many times, until
the dog begins to anticipate where
the food or toy is going to appear.
You'll know this anticipatory connection has been made when your dog
begins taking off at the sound of the
cue, before you even lift your hand to
throw. For a cue like "Catch," repeat
the same process, saying the cue,
but then tossing high and closer to
your body in a very obvious trajectory
the dog can track.
Teaching "Go" with food. For dogs that are already over-the-top about toys, it often helps to start with food at first until the pattern is established and the cue is learned. Light-colored foods work best for tossing games like chunks of string cheese, so the
dog can see them easily. Note: Say the word "Go" while the dog is looking at you (first photo), then throw the food-don't do
both at the same time.
