Kix went through x-rays of the pelvis, hips, and stifles. All were within
normal limits. He also has secured
an invitation for the World Agility
Open this year, making it even more
important that nothing was missed,
including back-related problems. So
Kix also had an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of the lumbar spine.
There were no vertebral disc herniations or compression of the nerve
roots detected, which would have
explained his symptoms.

The next step was a musculoskeletal ultrasound of the iliopsoas and the deep
gluteal area. There was a mild inflammation of the iliopsoas muscle detected,
which, historically, was not solely responsible for the symptoms. In the deep
gluteal area, the sciatic nerve, deep gluteal muscle, obturator muscle, piriformis muscle, and the gemelli muscles were scanned. There was swelling and irregularity within the sciatic nerve noted. Also, there was hyperechoic (chronic
scar tissue changes) and mottled echogenicity (chronic inflammation) within
both piriformis and gemelli muscles. In addition, mild impingement between
the sciatic nerve and piriformis muscle was detected. The final diagnosis was
sciatic neuritis due to probable deep gluteal/piriformis syndrome.

the sartorius muscle, and the superficial gluteal muscle on the left side.
There was also pain on palpation of
the sciatic nerve area, and restriction
on the piriformis stretch (externally
rotated flexed stifle placed in significant hip flexion). In addition, there
was a relatively small reaction to the
direct palpation on the lumbosacral
junction. The rest of the orthopedic
evaluation was within normal limits.
The neurological examination was
also within normal limits.
