Handling in Configurations, Part 4
Serpentines

In my "One Jump, Two Jump"
training program, I broke down
serpentine training into a two-jump
plan. I taught jumps #1 and #2
of the "serp" configuration first,
and then I taught jumps #2 and
#3 together. I still love getting this
comprehension sorted out for the
dog via these separate two-jump
exercises before putting it together
into a three-jump serpentine.
Recently I did an online study
group that focused on that training. The main point I want you to
know is that if you have to slow
down at all to handle a serp or
work extra hard to get your dog
to come in toward you over jump #2 (because if you get too far ahead,
your dog will run past jump #2), you need to go back to the drawing board
on the training end. These are not handling issues. Ditto if your dog has
a habit of running past the last jump of the serp. The study group video
covers all that.
This is a recording of an online study group in which we discussed
my Clean Run articles titled "Understanding Serpentines, Parts 1
and 2." In this video presentation, I use the articles and their diagrams to
explain how to handle and train the serpentine configuration.
This month's "Three Jump, Four Jump" work is for teams that have
trained the basics needed to execute serpentines. This means the handler can get ahead or be behind, and the dog can "read" the line and take
all the jumps. Teaching your dog to read serps comes from exposing the
dog to variations in space between the jumps and angles of the jumps.
Sequences and courses are made up of a finite number of configurations. When I teach handling,
I am always helping handlers spot these configurations. If the angles of the jumps are different from
the classic formations, it can get tricky. Obstacles other than jumps can also fool handlers into not
seeing the configuration.
If you look hard for the configurations, you will start to see them everywhere, but it won't happen
overnight. When I first challenged myself to master the "find the configurations in the course" game,
I sometimes discovered them only as a result of my handling choice when I walked the course.
If I was handling a section of the course like I would normally handle a serpentine, I would discover
that it was indeed a serpentine.
After reading this article, I suggest taking out some old course maps and looking for configurations.
Circle them as you would on a word find puzzle.
