your dog Caution: Don't Name Behaviors Too Soon in the game Most people
begin naming behaviors way too early, long before with you. they are
really solid. Many might start using the cues Tire and Tunnel in the first
session. You might think that this is okay because the dog is performing a
baby version of the behavior. The problem is that people then begin using
the cue to try to cause the behavior to happen, long before the dog is
truly confident or certain of the target behavior. Waiting until you have
a final version of the target behavior before you name it is much more
effective. By naming it, you are associating a verbal cue with a behavior
while it is being performed. Ideally, you want the performance of the
behavior to be perfect before you give it a name. Naming an imperfect
version of a behavior often means that the performance of that behavior
never becomes perfect. So, how do you let your dog know that you want him
to do something during your shaping sessions? We use the generic Go cue
for just about everything that is in progress. If the dog is facing an
object and we give him a Go cue, he knows what we're talking about. Once
we are regularly getting the final target behavior in the form we want, we
